I am a recent FlightSim Commander convert and appreciate one feature that is very handy. None the less you generally do file with SID and expected STAR at departure. But, even if you know the active at departure things can change - so your STAR could change with it. If you don't know the active runway(s) at the time of departure you can get a pretty good idea by checking winds (and it does help if you are familiar with the airport and know the 'usual' actives used). You can plug both into simroutes and look at the map provided by simroutes so you can actually see the difference. On routefinder if you click on either of the blue SIDs or STARs a box will popup and tell you that with these two options selected routefinder is determining an exit waypoint (sid) from your departure airport and an entrance (star) waypoint to your destination airport.Īs a rule of thumb you want your first waypoint in a flight plan approximately 100nm from your departure airport and your last waypoint approximately 100nm from your destination airport, this is so the sid and star you choose will not overlap your first and/or last waypoint. You choose your sid and star with the FMS and let the FMS add the sid and star waypoints to your flight plan. When you create a flight plan you do not want the flight plan to include the sid and star waypoints.
